Working Ranch House
Preservation & Renovation
This Tumacácori ranch house is a Spanish Colonial classic with a grand, yet livable graciousness. Authentic sun-baked adobe brick. Stucco. Vigas. Hand-rubbed plaster walls, carved doors and millwork. It’s all here. Though much of it needed a respectful update.
The 100-acre property includes a 5,000 square foot main house and several additional buildings all composed in the fashion of a traditional Southwestern homestead. Although a lovely compound, it had been disfigured by misguided updates over the years. So the current owners set about to restore and update the home for a modern lifestyle.
After careful planning and design we replaced the mechanical systems — electrical, plumbing and HVAC — to meet 21st century standards without compromising the historical integrity of the structure. Ill-conceived interior embellishments were removed. Wood, tile and stone floors were repaired. Plaster walls refinished. And the kitchen was completely updated with custom cabinets, high-end appliances and fixtures. Complimentary work was done to the pool house and elsewhere to enhance the outdoor livability. Most importantly the entire project was guided by thoughtful consideration for the home’s original nobility. It’s the perfect balance of preservation and renovation.

Silver and chrome accents are modern and sophisticated. The large center island in contrasting dark wood with a deep-set quartz top elevates a counter space to a performance space. As for the details? There’s a custom tile backsplash. Pot filler above the stove. Apron-front stainless farmhouse sink. A custom iron grill for the air supply. Interior cabinet lighting.
